Bring Your Big Guns First . . .

By admin On July 2, 2010 No Comments

My first direct selling job was in Atlanta, Georgia in the summer of
1985.

I answered an ad in the paper that was going to show me how to
make $1000 a week.

I scheduled a meeting.

Only then did I realize, I would be selling kitchen cutlery.

I went with the plan because I needed the money.

The first month I won salesman of the month.

I won a very nice $200 hunting knife.

I sold to all my Mom’s fiends.

And then to my Mom’s friend’s friends and so on.

But I soon learned I was limited by my time.

I wanted something better.

I quit and never sold cutlery again.

Back then, I was a punk kid looking for summer money.

I didn’t care about cutlery.

But today, I own the entire set of Cutco Cutlery.

It took me only 25 years to finally believe in this stuff.

The climax of the Cutco sales presentation was the most important
part of the selling pitch.

I would pull out the steel Cutco kitchen shears from my sample
case.

These shears were huge heavy duty size scissors.

They could cut anything from tin cans to chicken bones to soft
tissue paper.

I was trained to ask my buying prospect for a penny.

And I would ask if they drank wine.

Then, I would take the penny and start to cut it around the edges.

The penny would start to curl up into a tiny little cork screw.

And I would give the prospect the corkscrew penny to keep weather
they bought anything or not.

I would then let them know the kitchen shears were included for
free with their order.

PS. As I look back on my sales presentations, I can remember how
many presentations I was never able to complete because I lost them
during the presentation.

Today, I would have cut the penny first, not last.

Most people today hold their best selling features for the end of their
sales presentations when they should be showing them first.

So remember when you want something, bring out your big guns first,
NOT last.

If you wait till the end it may be too late.
