Dee from Point Loma just called me from a Craig’s list ad that I just posted.

It was for a kids bed frame and bunky board that my wife found on the side of the street two Saturdays ago.

She brought it home.

And I just got around to placing the ad up on Craig’s list.

The ad was free.

And within minutes of the listing going live, I’ve got my buyer.

The bed cost was zero dollars and a little muscle on my wife’s part.

The sale price is $20.

That’s a 2000% mark up.

I know $20 may not be a big deal to some.

But to you, it may be the difference of having a meal.

Or keeping your lights on this month.

Or paying you health insurance premium.

And a $20 bills start to add up when you do a bunch of these small bread and butter deals each month.

We all have to start somewhere.

And if it’s you picking up a bed on the side of the road, that’s where you start.

It’s the act of doing something that makes all the difference.

And the margins are incredible.

Also brokered a used 1997 Lincoln Mark VIII today on Craig’s list.

The buyer, Keith came down from Upland with the cash.

The boys and I will made $500 profit on this fast deal.

My son Joe found a first generation of Beyblade top.

Beyblades are a high-performance spinning top toy originally developed and manufactured by Takara starting in 2000.

In 2002, Hasbro Toys began to sell Beyblade toys internationally.

It was missing a part but this was still a rare and great find.

And you soon learn why.

Things were not always easy for me.

14 years ago, I was . . .

Busted

Broke

Bamboozled

Deflated

And embarrassed at the pitiful situation I had put myself in.

My biz partner had embezzled from our business.

I was in debt.

I moved from a nice two bedroom apartment into a tiny studio.

When my trusty white Honda Civic had a bad clutch, I had no money for the repair.

I also had no money for rent.

I was using a phone both and a Sprint card to make sales calls.

I had no credit.

I was really struggling.

So I decided to sell my Honda Civic.

I snapped this photo from my studio apartment moments before she was towed away.

( I knew this photo was going to be part of my comeback story someday )

Zamire, the car dealer offered me $1100 cash.

I took the cash.

I paid my rent and negotiated a financing deal for a used car.

I put down $200 on a brown 1981 Honda Civic.

I would only have to make three additional monthly payments of $300 and the car would be mine.

And let me tell you.

This car was a real beater.

Ask my wife.

Every time I drove it, I would prayed it would last me at least 6 months.

When it rained, water would get inside the distributor cap and the car would stall.

But ultimately, the car and the financing is what saved me.

It gave me breathing room so I could get my pen business going.

If the car dealer said he needed all $1100 up front, I would not be writing this e-mail now.
