20 Seconds of Insane Courage . . .

My youngest son Alan and I just watched a great movie.

It was called ‘We Bought a Zoo.’

And there was one line in the movie that we all need to live by.

One that will make you reflect on your own courage and bravery.

Here it is . . .

The father, Benjamin Mee, played by Matt Damon says to his troubled 13 year old son –

“You know, sometimes all you need is 20 seconds of insane courage, just literally 20 seconds of embarrassing bravery, and I promise you something great will come of it.”

And the more I reflect on his words, the more I see how they relate exactly to writing and sending e-mail.

I used to be afraid to send e-mails to you.

I was once too shy to share parts of my personal life with you.

It really did take a few seconds of “insane courage” to push the send button for my first e-mails.

“Dad . . . I Poo Fast” . . .

You’ll hear all kinds of cool e-mail headlines when you listen for
them.

Take this one, for example . . .

“You Little Dweeb.”

This one, I heard from my 10 year old son when I told him I was
going to have Barney, the purple dinosaur show up at his birthday
party.

And Alan, my 8 year old son, came up with this doozy while in the
bathroom.

He said .. “Dad . . . I Poo Fast.”

And so, I ran to write this headline down too.

Two headline and story ideas in one day just by having my headline
antenna turned on.

And . . . I wasn’t even trying.

And maybe that’s the point.

If you keep your ears open for great headlines and stories, you’ll
hear great headline and stories . . .

. . . . ALL THE TIME!

And if you capture them in writing, you’ll own them forever to use
as attention grabbers for your next e-mail promotion.

But don’t forget to write them down the second you hear them or
you may loose them and that one great idea may never return to your
memory.

And here’s another interesting thing I’ve noticed about my story
and headline creation efforts.

Recently, I had stopped looking for headlines and story ideas.

My antenna was switched off for 21 days.

And when I turned it back on, I could not believe how fast and
intense the headline and story ideas started rushing back into my
mind.

There was an avalanche of ideas and stories.

My antenna was now more receptive than ever.

And more powerful.

I’ve heard alcoholics, sex addicts or food addicts experience
something like this during relapse.

This “headline relapse” is the same kind of thing, but it’s a good
thing.
