She Was a Large Lady . . .

It was 1984 and my freshman year at University of Alabama.

Glenda Chadwick was the house mother to 40 frat boys of the ZBT house.

She was a large lady.

She lived in the fraternity house on the bottom floor in a one bedroom studio.

She was Mom to all of us away from home for the first time.

She planned the meals, organized kitchen help and more.

She had a little lopsa opsa dog named Sugar that lived with her.

And the thing I’ll never forget upon entering Mrs. Chadwick’s room
for the first time was the horrific stench of her dog, her dog’s urine
and her dog’s poo in her room.

The smell was overpowering, repulsive and completely obvious to anyone.

We all joked about it and felt sorry for her at the same time.

We all have Mrs. Chadwick’s in our life.

Friends, family member and associate who are deep in over their heads.

But to them, everything smells just fine.

And that’s why I want to ask you if you’ll do me one favor.
