Choose the leather . . .
I have this thing lately that I have been doing with my 10 year old before bed.
I tell him that I am not going to let him go to sleep until I make him laugh.
Now, I don’t want some little smile or a chuckle.
I want a belly laugh.
I really want to try and crack him up.
And sometimes it’s not that easy do to.
I have to act like a real idiot to get him going.
So last night Joe was talking about one of his little action figure toys named Naga.
Naga is a evil Bakugan ( Top Selling kids Toy of 2009 ) that wants to take over earth and Vestroya.
Vestroya is the planet that all Bakugan live on.
Anyway, I didn’t know much about this planet thingy and all I could think about was the word Naugahyde.
And it came out.
I said.
Naaaaaaaauuugahyyyde.
And I got him going.
And I said it again . . .
louder this time with a southern accent.
Naaaaaaaaaugaaaahyyyyyde . . .
And he cracked up again.

Funny sounding word, ha?
After he stopped laughing, he asked what is Naugahyde?
And I told him it’s a cheap imitation leather.
I said ” Joe , when you get older and when you work, you’ll have your chance to buy your own couch or recliner or sports car.
You’ll have a choice to buy either real genuine soft as butter leather or you’ll have to settle for Naugahyde.
I explained the one main thing other then being an animal rights activist that will determine that decision is how much money you have to spend.
And so, I said “I hope you’ll choose the leather.”
This little story makes me think of a Dave.

1. The Claude Hopkins Rare Ad Collection And Study Guide
Claude C. Hopkins (1866-1932) was one of the great advertising pioneers, he believed advertising existed only to sell something and should be measurable and justify the results that it produced.
He worked for various advertisers, including Bissell Carpet Sweeper Company, Swift & Company and Dr. Shoop’s patent medicine company. At the age of 41, he was hired by Albert Lasker owner of Lord & Thomas advertising in 1907 at a salary of $185,000 a year, Hopkins insisted copywriters researched their client products and produce reason-why copy. He believed that a good product was often its own best salesperson and as such he was a great believer in sampling.
To track the results of his advertising he used key coded coupons and then tested headlines, offers and propositions against one another. He used the analysis of these measurements to continually improve his ad results, driving responses and the cost effectiveness of his clients advertising spend.
His classic book, “Scientific Advertising,” was published in 1923, following his retirement from Lord & Thomas, where he finished his career as president and chairman. He died in 1932.
