The Wave – A Short Story About Marketing . . .

Last Saturday night, my son and I were invited to a San Diego Chargers football game.

Four other boys and dads were there from the summer rec league basketball team.

And so all the dads are watching the game.

And the kids are antsy and can’t sit still and they decide they want to start a wave in the seventy thousand fan stadium.

I remember doing the wave at Alabama games from my college football days.

You know what it is, right?

It’s where a section of the fans in the stands suddenly stand, raise their hands to the sky and then sit down.

And the section next to you does the same and on and on down and around to create an ocean like wave of fans that would ripple all around the stadium.

How cool is that.

So my son and his friends decided to go down the stairs to the front of section 18 to start this wave.

The Chargers are up against the Arizona Cardinals by 10.

Now, I don’t know if you’ve ever tried this?

But it’s not an easy task.

I watched the boys strategize and puzzle over exactly what their plan of attack was going to be.

All the Dad’s were watching to see if they could pull it off too.

Can you imagine the feeling of a 13 year old kid getting a stadium full of fans to do what they want them to do?

Pure Power.

They take action.

I can see them running side to side waving their hands up trying to get the fans to do the wave.

And nothing happens.

Other than a few hand go up in the air.

Defeated, the boys come back to their seats to blame each other for their failure.

Then, they get a second wind.

They are NOT going to give up.

Back down again to try one more time.

And with more vigor and piss than before, they in unison raise and lower they arms to simulate and direct fans to start a wave.

But this time a response.

” Get out the way kids, we’re trying to watch the game”

The boys come back accepting their defeat and scratching their little heads wondering what went wrong.

The Anti USP (Unique Selling Proposition) . . .

“I want food”, my son cried.

So today, my wife, son and I went to the UTC Mall for lunch.

No one could decide on a place, so we chose the food court.

My wife got a salad from Rubio’s Mexican Cantina.

Alan got Indian curry and naan from Taste of India.

And I went with the shawarma Greek salad with extra tzatziki sauce.

We find a nice place to sit.

And we’re all enjoying our food and conversation.

Then Alan scoops up this little dark thing on his white plastic spoon.

He brings it closer to his face to see if it’s safe to eat.

I look at it.

My wife looks at it.

And I kid you not, it looks like a cock roach covered in Indian curry.

I confirmed it when I saw two little antennae sticking out of the dark mass.

Alan is repulsed, almost gagging at the thought that he just ate most of his curry with a cock roach in it.

My wife takes the roach in a napkin and heads off to show the manager.

I’m trying to calm Alan and minimize the situation . . .

“Dude, it’s no big deal.

Most of the world eats bugs.

They’ve got protein in them.

Plus, you didn’t actually eat it.”

But I was even discusted.

My wife comes back to the table all smiles to tell us it was not a cock roach.

It was only a cardamom pod, a common ingredient used in Indian cooking.

When the seed gets moist the fibrous hairs separate.

It didn’t matter to me or Alan.

In our minds, it was still a cock roach.

The damage had been done.

I asked Alan . . .

“would you ever eat at this Indian place again even though you know it was only a cardamom seed and not an insect?”

His answer . . .  HELL NO!

And this is what you unknowingly do to the minds of your prospects with the wrong kind of USP.

It’s All About Lightness . . .

With the new time change, my son Alan and I have been taking walks around the old neighborhood after dinner.

It gives up some time to talk, tell jokes and sing songs.

I grabbed a branch to use as my walking stick that we got from the park the day before.

And then Alan stole it from me.

I wanted a walking stick too.

And I remembered I had a ski pole from a set of skis that we bought as a recent garage sale.

And we started walking.

And Alan, has his branch.

And I, have my ski pole.

We get the park and I’ve got to tie my shoe.

So I stop and instead of laying my pole down, I jam my poll into the soft grass and blurt out to Alan, “My stick does that”.

And Alan tries to do the same with his branch from the park.

And it breaks in two.

My stick was a SCOTT, Aluminum Ski pole.

135 centimeter long.

Made in the world’s most sophisticated ski pole factory in Italy and became the global leader in ski pole production.

Ed Scott, a talented engineer revolutionized the sport of snow skiing with the first tapered aluminum ski pole.

Aluminum immediately replaced the sport’s existing use of bamboo and steel.
