Is It Raining?

By admin On June 8, 2011 Under HMA Marketing Consulting

In high school, my best friend, my brother and I had built an on
ground fort in the back yard 250 feet behind our house.

This was way better then a tree house.

It eventually became famous in our neighborhood and was dubbed “The
Studio.”

We built the Studio into the ground with left-over plywood and
two-by-fours we had from a remodel of our home’s basement.

The Studio started out in the shape of a big rectangle.

It measured 15 feet long, 8 feet wide and 3 1/2 feet tall.

Just tall enough to sit up without our heads hitting the wood roof.

The Studio had a hinged and locking door.

We ran electrical by connecting five 50 foot extension cords that
plugged into our home’s electrical outlet.

There was a secret knock you had to do to get in.

The Studio had a left over mattress, blankets, heater, wall-to-wall
carpet and was decorated with a rainbow of Christmas lights.

And it became our favorite place that summer of 1979.

All of our friends in the neighborhood would come to the Studio.

Our parents were so impressed with it they would bring their
friends into the studio to look.

Kids from the neighborhood when they ran away from home, they would
stay in the studio.

We eventually upgraded with a corded telephone, strobe lights, lava
lamps, and even sweet smelling incense.

My sister’s friends would come into the studio and I have memories
there I’ll never forget.

It was a gathering place for family and neighborhood friends.

And one summer night the fun was over.

Atlanta Georgia poured with rain.

And the studio became flooded.

We over-looked something simple but important . . .

Weatherproofing.

We were so excited to get “The Studio” built, that the thought of
rain never crossed our minds.

And that’s how most folks plan for their financial futures.

Glen W. Turner would tell his students this . .

“Most of us at the age of 65, over 85% won’t even be worth $600.

You’ll depend on social security, welfare, unemployment to take
care of you.

This is the way most of our lives end.

Because we know that we can take a two week vacation, everybody
does it.

But everybody can’t be a millionaire, and everybody can’t be a
success and everybody can’t be happy.

In fact most of us won’t ever amount to anything.

We know it and we accept it because we’ve been taught this by our
friends and by our neighbors.

And our friends and neighbors don’t know any better because that’s
what they’ve been taught also.”

PS. We eventually rebuilt “The Studio”.

But this time, we planed for future rainy days.
