A Case Against Marketing Consulting/Coaching

By admin On June 7, 2009 No Comments

Here’s an interview with a consultant that was hating the
consulting biz even though he was getting huge consulting fees.

It’s a side of the consulting biz you won’t hear from other
consulting offers.

I want to show you a dark side of marketing consulting not revealed
until now.

Go to this link to download the interview.

Here’s what happened.

I get this e-mail below from Kory Basaraba

Hi Michael,

I was actually thinking a lot about you and the HMA marketing
consulting opportunity this evening, so maybe it’s the timing of
your email that’s got me writing.

Here’s how it’s going…

For the last 8 years I’ve been a “marketing consultant”. More
accurately, I end up implementing everything a company needs to get
their marketing off the ground from copy to websites to graphic
design to video production to database management and coordinating
all the moving pieces.

I’ve been selling for 20 years. I have worked on websites for
fortune 500 companies, learned how to program databases and manage
large projects, and have been following Jay Abraham and Dan Kennedy
and all the marketing guru’s since 1997.

I’ve never had a problem getting clients. My problem has been
getting the work done once I start and under charging for my
services (Started out charging $3,000 8 years ago.

The last 3 clients have been $30,000 up front plus a % of increased
sales, and that was still under-charging for the amount of work I
end up doing).

I also take on too many projects at once and get way wrapped up
trying to “save” my clients businesses or doing extra work for no
charge because they can’t afford to pay for what needs to happen.

Anyway – after 8 years I decided none of it was working.

I wasn’t happy.

I knew I created all of it from my choices along the way and that I
had to un-create the situation.

I got sick 3 weeks ago and ended up in bed for almost a month
thinking about all the important things in life.

Now that I’m back on my feet I made some changes.

This week I fired all my clients (walked away from substantial
royalty income) and decided to simplify my life.

My focus is now on copywriting – something I’ve been working on for
5 years – and also (curiously) the HMA system is regularly in my
thoughts.

I’ve been following your stuff for about 4 years now and am
constantly tempted to sign up because of the simplicity of the
system.

It has clear expectations, clear budgets, well defined projects and a
FINISH LINE to look forward to.

I hope everything is well with you and that you are on track to
reaching your goals this year. I’ve seen how consistent you are
about moving forward with your business and you deserve all the
success you can handle.

Best regards,

Kory Basaraba

Hi Michael,

Thanks for the welcome and for putting up all the free HMA info on
your website.

I know you have heard this many times before but I have landed my
first HMA client yesterday just by using the free opportunity
analysis worksheet and multiple recordings on your site.

The fee should pay for the course.

You are a freakin genius.

Michael,

Here’s the story:

Originally, I had an meeting with the owner of a major
plumbing/electrical/kitchen renovation services company to discuss
the possibility of doing joint ventures (with me acting as the
broker).

The day of the meeting I decided that although I had not
received the HMA course yet I would have a go at doing the HMA
opportunity analysis instead because I had gone through the free
recordings and downloaded the opportunity worksheet as well.

When we began the meeting I just followed the worksheet and started
by asking him about his business, how he got started and plans for
growth etc.

I didn’t follow the exact order of the worksheet but basically
asked the right questions when he started explaining his
different marketing methods.

Whenever I saw an underutilized marketing asset I told him so and
he always agreed and said that he just needs to get around to it.

At the end of the discussion we agreed that he has lots of
opportunities and he just has an issue around execution.

After discussing some possible solutions with him I said that if he
wants, he can do my suggestions himself with the help of his staff
and said that I knew he would succeed but that I would be happy to
do them for him on a project by project basis so that he can get
some traction and get execution happening.

Anyway he agreed for me to do the USP project in three weeks time
by which time I will have had time to immerse myself in the course.

The main lesson for me was that my experience was never questioned
because the focus was always on his problems and solutions and my
obvious desire to help him and his business.

I think too, that he liked the no pressure approach where he was
free to use my ideas and there would be no charge but that I was
happy to work on them for the project fee and this would free up
his time and ensure that things got done.

Cheers,

Lewis

Here’s Some Good News About The Sound Quaility Of My Audio Interviews

By admin On June 7, 2009 No Comments

I am going to be greatly improving the sound quality of my audio
interviews.

Over the years I’ve been using a digital Sony MP3 recorder and a
telephone recording device from RadioShack to record my interviews.

I’m now making the switch to a new online recording service at

http://www.talkandrecordonline.com

The service is a bit pricy, but I feel well worth it.

Here’s why . . .

The first and most important reason is the sound quality.

It’s a quality I’ve never been able to get with my digital
recorder.

And there is no delay like you get using skype or VOIP recording
services.

Reason two …

I edit ALL of my audio interviews.

A one hour audio interview can take up to five hours of editing.

And one of the most time consuming parts of the editing is manually
making my voice and the person I am interviewing’s voice the same
volume level.

There is no reliable or automated way to do this.

It must all be done by hand.

And when you’re paying for editing by the hour, the cost can add up
fast.

http://www.talkandrecordonline.com has a way to raise and or lower
your guest’s sound level before you begin recording your interview.

This completely eliminates the extra labor, time and cost spent on
editing the volume levels of interview guests.

This is huge… Savings both time and money.

Other features this service offers are very impressive too.

It’s hands down the best alternative I’ve seen other than buying
high end microphones and recording equipment.

All you’ll need is a regular telephone or cell phone and an
Internet connection to record high end quality interviews.

You don’t have to be chained in front of your computer to record
your calls with this service and you can talk and record from your
mobile phone too.

Check it out for free.

No cost, no obligation, no commitment.

You’re invited to preview it now at:

http://www.talkandrecordonline.com

I hope you like it.

PS. How much of a problem do you think the sound quality to my
audios have been for you? Is better quality sound something that
you want or are you ok with the current sound quality.

I would appreciate your feedback either way.

Just hit me back with your two cents on this audio quality thing by e-mailing me at: michael@michaelsenoff.com
