Hopper’s Hands . . .
Did you know San Francisco’s most iconic landmark is also the world’s #1 suicide destination?
And did you know bridge construction workers volunteer to save jumpers from ending it all?
I was unaware of these heroes, at least until I learned about Hopper’s Hands.
Ken Hopper, 17 year Golden Gate Bridge iron worker noticed how waterfront joggers have a ritual of touching the chain link fence at the dead-end of the sidewalk next to Fort Point.
So he had the bridge’s sign painter make a sign with two hand prints on it.
And another sign with two dog paws, because one woman had her dog touch the fence.
Local runners know you’re supposed to run to Hopper’s Hands, high five the hands, and turn around to run back to the city.
The pair of hands at the base of the bridge, are meant to give hope to all who encounter them.
They are there to remind us of Hopper’s plea:
“Turn Around”
The story behind the hands has added new meaning to my trip to San Francisco.
My family did every imaginable tourist thing a family could do in this great city.
Like . . .
Ride the Hyde and Powell cable car.
Ate clam chowder on Fisherman’s Wharf.
Sampled food at the renowned Ferry Plaza Farmers Market
Enjoyed ice cream at Humphry Slocombe at 2790 Harrison St.
Marveled at the City skyline from Twin Peaks
And the rich forest at Muir Woods.
Ate Spare Ribs at the San Francisco landmark, Tommy’s Joint
Drove Lombard Street
Climbed stairs to Coit Tower
Lunch at “Fish” in Sausalito
Candle Stick Park
The streets of Height Ashbury
China Town
The World Famous Bush Man
Chocolate at Ghirardelli Square
The painted ladies atop Alamo Square
From Cow Palace
To Capitola
Santa Cruz
And back.
To the beauty of the Golden Gate Bridge.
And I’ll cherish all of these wonderful memories with my family.
But it’s the story of Hopper’s Hands that I’ll remember the most.

Are You A Yellow Door Man . . .
In a recent interview with Ben Gay, he told me the story about . .
—— “The Yellow Door Man” ——
And within the story’s message, you’ll learn a simple way to maintain and build secret relationships.
And it’s a lesson Ben learned from his good friend, the late Ray Considine.
Here’s how Ben told it . . .
“Ray Considine sincerely made me believe for 40 years I was his best friend on earth.
And I’m sure I was one of many best friends on earth to Ray.
That’s just the way he was.
Ray built secret relationships with everybody.
And as a result he always got the best.
Ray would say “Somewhere . . there’s always a yellow door.”
I’ll never forget a story when he went to the World’s Fair in New York.
And there was the AT&T exhibit.
It was the most popular spot at the fair.
The lines were four hours long.
And Ray’s standing in line and he looks over and sees a yellow door on the side of the building.
Like a service entrance or something.
And Ray goes over and knocks on the yellow door.
And he begins a typical Ray Considine conversation with whoever opens the door.
And he and his wife are suddenly inside the exhibit.
They are not at the head of the line but in the actual exhibit.
Ray laughed when he told the story.
He told me to always look around because there’s always a yellow door.
And when you get there be prepared to make a friend.
