The Bet . . .
Every Wednesday night is now officially, “taco night.” at our house for dinner.
So last night, Alan, my eight year old wanted to put ketchup on his Mexican rice.
I told him how that was kind of funny and sort of gross.
This event, instantly made me think about Booth.
In high school, I had a job as a bus boy at a BBQ restaurant called Tony Roma’s Ribs
The worst job you could have there was that of dish washer.
If it was you washing dishes that night, you were the
Outsider.
The outcast.
And everyone knew Booth, the dishwasher at Tony Romas.
Booth was a big and fat man with blond greasy hair.
Always in his eyes.
There was gambling going on in the kitchen on most nights.
Frank and the cooks would pitch pennies.
Busboys would play cards.
But one slow night, Booth made the busboys a bet.
He bet $10 that he could drink a full class of whatever kind of food we put in it without throwing up.
So we took on his bet and began to make him a concoction of some of the grossest things we could find.
We filled up a big glass with ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, A1 Steak Sauce, relish and the hickory smoke sauce that Tony Roma’s would use to bake the ribs in.
We put in Tabasco, pepper and even milk.
And we all gathered around and to watch Booth try to take this stuff down.
We did not want to loose our tip money and we all secretly wanted booth to fail.
Booth took the first sip and shook his head.
His eyes squeezed shut and we all started chanting.
Booth….. Booth…… Booth….. Booth…… Booth……. Booth.
And before you knew it, Booth drank the entire glass of gross.
We were all laughing.
And gagging at the same time.
We told him how gross that was and how we could not believe that he drank that stuff.
And I’ll never forget it.
He smiled, held out his hand and happily took his $10
This story reminds me of all the gross stuff I’ve had to do in my life to get to where I am now.
Like late nights
Long tedious days
Setback after setback.
I know I am not telling you anything new.
You’ve got your glass of gross stories too.
Marketing Consulting can be gross.
Rejection is part of this game.
Setbacks will challenge your very spirit.

It’s about these two cool dudes, Mike Wolfe and Frank Fritz.
These guys are on a mission to recycle America.

The Little Business Secret I Learned From Ants . . .
I’d like to share a childhood story with you.
When I was a 8 years old growing up in Atlanta Georgia, my triplet sister, Robyn and I loved ants.
We lived on a large wooded lot located at 540 Riverside Park Way, right off the 285 in Sandy Springs.
And during the summers days we’d find along the side of our driveway big red ant hills.
They were made from the red Georgia clay.
We’d lay on our bellies and watch these amazing little creatures for hours.
Scientists claim ants can carry more than 50 times their body weight.
And did you know a colony of 40,000 ants has collectively the same size brain as a human.
So when it started to storm and rain and thunder, it was our first instinct to protect our ants friends.
Robyn and I would run inside to our kitchen as fast as we could.
And we’d grab a roll of Tin Foil.
And construct a roof so we could cover our ant’s home.
All of them!
And I remember coming out to check on them after the rain let up.
Even as children, we understood how much effort it took our little ants to build their red clay hills.
As I think about this story, I couldn’t help but think about how these ant hills getting rained on are like many of the businesses in our small towns and cities today.
The small businesses in your local area.
The ones at the end of your street.
Experiencing declining sales.
Higher rents and leases.
Less traffic walking through the door.
Lower dollar transactions.
Businesses who are finding it harder to differentiate their business from their competition.
Harder to get business credit.
Businesses who are not using their own marketing assets to save themselves.
