Taco Night . . .

We have a new thing at out house for dinner.

Every Wednesday night is now, officially, taco night. 

So, last night, my six year old wanted to put ketchup on his
Mexican rice. 

I told him how that was kind of funny and sort of gross.

This event, instantly made me think about Booth.

In high school, I had a job as a bus boy at a BBQ restaurant called
Tony Roma’s Ribs

The worst job you could have there was that of dish washer.

And everyone knew the dish washer at Tony Romas.

He was a big, fat and ugly looking man.

There was some gambling going on between the guys on slow nights.

Some of the cooks in the kitchen would pitch pennies.

Some would play cards.

One night Booth bet us $10 that he could drink a full class of
whatever kind of food we put in it without throwing up.

So we took on his bet and began to make him a concoction of some of
the grossest things we could find.

We filled up a big tall glass with ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, A1
Steak Sauce, relish and the hickory smoke sauce that Tony Roma’s
would use to bake the ribs in.

We put in Tabasco, pepper and even milk.

And we all gathered around and to watch Booth try to take this
stuff down.

We did not want to loose our tip money and we all wanted him to
fail.

Booth took the first sip and shook his head.

His eyes squeezed shut and we all started chanting.

Booth….. Booth…… Booth….. Booth…… Booth……. Booth.

And before you knew it, Booth drank the entire glass of gross.

We were all laughing at him.

We told him how gross that was and how we could not believe that he
drank that stuff.

And I’ll never forget it.

He smiled, held out his hand and happily took his $10

This story reminds me of all the gross stuff I’ve had to do in my
life to get to where I am now.

Like late nights, long tedious days and setback after setback.

I know I am not telling you anything new.

You have your gross stories too.

Marketing Consulting can be gross.

Rejection is part of this game.

Setbacks will challenge your very spirit.

And you’ll want to quit.

But, if you can stomach a glass of setbacks and frustrations for a
short time, you could be on your way to one of the sweetest careers
a man can have.

But if you are willing to work, willing to sweat and willing to
fail, you can make it doing your thing.
