The Climax . . .

By admin On January 5, 2010 Under Rants

My first direct selling job was the summer of 1989.

I answered and ad in the paper that was going to show me how to
make $1000 a week.

I called and was scheduled to go to a meeting.

Only then did I realize, I would be selling kitchen cutlery.

I went with the plan because I needed money.

I had nothing better going.

I did well.

The first month I won salesman of the month.

I won a hunting knife.

I hit up all my mom’s fiends, my friends moms and so on.

I sold cutlery but was limited by my time.

I quit after that summer and never sold kitchen cutlery again.

Back then, I was just a kid looking for summer spending money.

I didn’t care about knives, cooking  or cutlery.

But now I do.

And today I own the entire set of Cutco Cutlery.

It took me 20 years to believe in this stuff.

And now for the “climax”.

I was trained that the climax of the Cutco sales presentation was
the most important part of the selling pitch.

I would pull out the steel Costco kitchen shears from my sample case.

These shears were huge heavy duty size scissors.

They could cut anything from tin cans to chicken bones to soft
tissue paper.

And for the climax of the selling pitch, I would ask my buying
prospect for a penny.

And I would ask if they drank wine.

Then I would take the penny and start to cut it around the edges.

The penny would start to curl up into a tiny little corkscrew.

And I would give the prospect the corkscrew penny to keep weather
they bought anything or not.

I would then let then know the kitchen shears were included for free
with their order.

I would then ask for the order.

PS. As I look back on this cutlery sales presentations, I would have
cut the penny first, not last.

Most people hold their best selling features until the end, when they
should be showing them first.

So remember when want something, bring out the big guns first, NOT last.
