The Golf Ball Story . . .

On Sunday we made plans to drive up to Julian California, an old
gold rush town and home of the word famous, Mom’s Apple Pie.

I had already told the kids they could each buy a little crystal
glass figure at Crossroads Treasures Rock and Gift Shop located on
California, Hwy 79.

So the boys had something to keep them excited on the 90 mile drive.

The problem was, we first needed to get Ace, our leopard gecko a
heat rock.

We found one on Craig’s list and had to meet the guy at 11:00.

The kids were coming off the Thanksgiving vacation and they had
school on Monday.

And because of our late start we were squeezed for time.

So my wife and I wanted to back out of the Julian drive and postpone
it till this weekend.

The kids were going to be upset because we already told them we
were going and we promised them their crystal glass figures.

And I’ve told them many time, when you make a promise, you keep
your word no matter what.

What were we to do?

Here’s what we came up with.

It was lunch time, so we went to the Von’s grocery store and got
sandwiches and a bag of the new BAKED! RUFFLES® Original Potato

We drove to a street overlooking the Del Mar Beach and had us a
little family picnic.

We sat on the grass looking out and over into the gorgeous pacific
ocean.

On the green grass my wife noticed pine nuts that had fallen from

So we collected two large zip lock bags of pine nuts and went for a
walk on the beach.

So we drove north to the world famous Torrey Pines Golf Course.

This is the most picturesque championship 18-hole golf courses in

And now my two sons, one on each side of me and I were walking the
west fence searching for lost and stray gold balls.

Alan, my younger one said . . .

“Dad, this is like an Easter egg hunt.”

It didn’t take long until my vest pockets were stuffed full with
golf balls.

So we made our way to the North putting green and driving range hut.

A nice young man named Alex was manning the hut.

The kids told Alex that we found a bunch of lost golf balls and we
wanted to turn them in.

I asked Alex how much to hit a bucket of balls and Alex said that
this bucket was on him.

So the kids each got putters and mini drivers and we all three hit
gold balls for the rest of the afternoon.

My kids had forgotten all about our plans for Julian.

They had forgotten about the crystal glass figures too.

And it was simply a day with my family that I’ll never forget.
