The Happy Barber . . .
Here’s a fast little story that can change how you do the ordinary into the extraordinary.
It won’t take but a minute to share.
For five solid years I’ve been loyal to a hair stylist for my hair cuts.
It was only recently when I realized that as my hair count decreased, her pricing increased.
And when she got to $25 a cut, I shopped for an alternative.
Up the street from my home was a barber shop.
It was in a run down strip mall.
I could see his window sign from my car every time I drove by.
On the window his name was proudly displayed.
He was the . . “Happy Barber.”
$8 haircuts.
$7 for seniors.
Walkins welcome.
Open.
I parked and walked in.
There were six barber chairs all facing East towards a mirrored wall.
And all chairs were filled with customers.
I sat and gawked in amazement as I waited my turn.
Above the mirrors were pictures of young boys with different hair styles.
Each photo was numbered.
The oldest barber waved me over.
He said.. You, sit, your turn.
He said.. My name Happy.
He must have been 70.
I asked him how long he had been in this location.
He said “14 year.”
His English was poor.
He asked . . . What number?
I pointed to number three and said not too short.
He began and fireworks started to fly.
First – he smacked my neck with one of those horse tail brushes.
A cloud of baby smelling powder started flying everywhere.
Then he wrapped a paper doily thing around my neck.
Then he drapes a cape over my lap and chest to keep me cleared from my own cut hair.
He pulls out his electric shears.
Then the buzzers started singing.
And he starts buzzing my head.
He’s snapping different cutting tools onto the shears for different parts of my head.
One for the front, another one for the top, a different cutter for my sides and even one for the hair in my ears.
He was using scissors and a comb too.
He would pop his comb against his scissors every time he needed to clear hair off the scissor blade.
He told me in his broken English …
Here we don’t cut hair, we bring out best in face.
He was bending, squinting, looking for any hair out of place.
He was snipping each stray hair with lightning fast snip snips.
This was an incredible haircut experience.
Not one hair out of place.
He even cut the stray hairs on my eyebrows.
And for only $8.
Happy made getting a hair cut an event.
And this hair cut experience reminds me of Jon Barnes.
Jon transforms the ordinary into the extraordinary.
He makes an ordinary Taxi ride better then a Broadway show.
The Ultimate Taxi was born on Halloween night, 1983, Jon’s vision started modestly with a few flashlights, some dry ice, a Star Trek light on the dash, a good sound system, and some strategically-placed tin foil.
The rest is history. Today, Jon Barnes from The Ultimate Taxi bills his cab as the only music studio, nightclub, planetarium, toy store, and Internet taxi on the planet!
It’s a rock & roll concert, roller coaster ride, magic show, movie ride, laser light show, and photo shoot.
From the front seat of his 1978 Checker Cab, Barnes orchestrates a sophisticated in-taxi light show, complete with 9 lasers, 14 miniature stage lights, a revolving disco ball, and a $2,000 haze machine.
The ride also includes toys, rainbow glasses, and a photo page on his world-famous web site
Famous celebrities like Ringo Starr, George Lucas, Jimmy Buffet, Clint Eastwood, Bob Dole, Michael Eisner, Michael Douglas, and Kevin Costner are among the many notables who have enjoyed this magical, mystery tour.
In this interview you are going to learn and travel along with Jon as he describes his journey from novice taxi driver in Aspen, providing an entertaining ride, to purveyor of an other worldly, high-tech experience of a lifetime.
