The Ribbon

This short story may give you the encouragement to try harder.

At the end of every June we take the kids to the famous Delmar County fair.

It’s a must do summer tradition we’ve done about every summer.

There was a special offer in the local newspaper that said if you bring in a pasta dish, you could get into the fair for free.

There was also a contest for anyone who wanted to enter their pasta dish.

And I was ready for the challenge.

My wife laughed at me and thought I was silly to even try.

I had never entered any kind of cooking contest before.

The thought of me trying and showing my boys that if you try you can win was my main driving force.

I wanted to show them that I could win despite what anyone said.

I was determined to walk home with a winning ribbon.

So I came up with the idea to really grab the attention of the judges.

And what I entered was a flower pot BBQ black bean and cheese pasta dish.

I bought a medium size clay flower pot.

I then went to a Mexican food drive through and ordered a side of barbecue beans.

I then got shredded sharp cheddar cheese and layered it between soft lasagna pasta and BBQ black beans.

I continued to make multiple layers and then placed my clay pot BBQ black bean pasta concoction into my smoker.

I smoked it slow and low at 225 degrees fahrenheit using real wood mesquite chips.

After entering the fair with the family for free, I registered my pasta dish in to the contest.

Any person within 10 feet could smell it.

We enjoyed the fair and at 3 PM we went back to see if I was one of the winners.

My kids and wife waited outside while I went in to the award area.

And there it was.

A yellow ribbon for fifth place.

I pinned the ribbon on to my chest and walked out to meet my wife and kids.

Mission accomplished.

Lesson learned.

This is a simple and important lesson I wanted my kids to see.

If you don’t play, you’re not going to win.
