He Learned to Ride A Bike at 23 . . .

On Thursday my two sons saw the Twins from across the street walking with their Dad to the park.

Joe, my 12 year old, said “I’m going to the park”.

Alan and I told Joe that we’d meet him there in 10 minutes.

I then hopped on my Beach Cruiser.

Alan mounted his bike and put his helmet on.

And we were biking to the park.

I can remember like it was yesterday teaching both my boys how to ride a bike for the first time.

It’s a memory a father never forgets.

And let me tell you, it was not easy.

I had to learn how to teach them.

And I did and eventually, both boys learned.

We take this complex skill of motion, movement and balance for granite.

So Alan and I meet up with Joe and the twins at the basketball court.

The next thing I know, I hear Shelley, my wife, walking towards us.

She’s walking alongside a tall Chinese man who was trying to ride a bike for the first time.

My wife was not having too much success so I told her to bring him into the courts.

I . . .

was going to teach him How To Ride a Bike.

Michael’s a 23 year old exchange student studying engineering and English in America.

His English was broken.

He said “a part of China I comes from had many hills, so I never learn to ride bicycle”.

I offered to help teach and I showed Michael the same secrets I use to teach my sons.

I told Michael that he was never going to forget this day.

With my instruction, and 30 minutes of practice, Michael was riding.

I still had to show him the best way to start off by pushing down on the peddle from the up position.

I had to review how to change gears.

And I had to even show him how to use the handbrakes to stop.

Diamond Dave and his twin boys had to leave.

And the boys and I where ready to head back for the night too.

I shook Michael’s hand and told him to keep practicing.

He thanks me for taking time to teach him how to ride bike.

And right as we were leaving, Michael said to me in his broken English . .

“I thought I was too old to learn to ride bike”.

And this is the limiting mindset most people have today.
